The Meaders Residence is significant to this firm because of the relationship built with the client, and the opportunities provided to our firm. At the time of the commission, our fourth with this client, this was our largest residential project, both in terms of square footage and budget. The success we have enjoyed with this client is due to our ability to communicate well and continually think of creative solutions to everyday challenges.
The owners found a wooded urban lot to build a home for their family of six. The challenge to the program was that he wanted an extremely contemporary home to feature their art collection, while she wanted a warm and inviting home to entertain a large extended family. We met their goals by incorporating the earthiness of rough back limestone and warmly toned rift-cut white oak mill work with extensive open walls of custom steel window assemblies. The large expanses of glass visually connect the interior spaces to the exterior terraces, sculpture gardens, and reflecting pools. The neutral tone and low slope of the standing seam metal roof integrates into the canopy of the trees and landscape. Collaborating with the landscape architect facilitated in a cohesive design that extends the home into the yard and its surroundings.
